Parent Friendly Entertainment Reviews by Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media
Every week new movies, games, websites, TV shows, books and music are released into the wild. As parents, we want our kids to see some of these shows and read some of these books, but it’s difficult to know if they’re age appropriate.

Common Sense Media was created to solve the problem of knowing what’s appropriate and innapropriate for your children. Their mission statement says:

Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the media and entertainment lives of kids and families.

We exist because media and entertainment profoundly impact the social, emotional, and physical development of our nation’s children. As a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization, we provide trustworthy information and tools, as well as an independent forum, so that families can have a choice and a voice about the media they consume.

They thoroughly review each each entertainment piece and provide the information that parents need to know. They focus specifically on the moral messages, whether or not it has violence and sex, and how offensive the language is. They also specify the age they think it’s appropriate for.

A good example can be seen with the movie Coraline. Although it’s a stop-motion animation film that looks like it would appeal to children, reading the review would suggest otherwise. They report that the film has themes of violence and sex, and that children under nine-years-old shouldn’t see it.

Researchers are encouraging parents to turn off the television when toddlers are in the room, particularly when it’s only being used as background noise.

Researchers observed 50 kids aged 1 to 3 at play in a room for an hour: half the time was television-free, and half the time the TV show “Jeopardy” was playing on a television in the room. Although the children in the room while the TV was on glanced up only occasionally, the researchers saw clear signs that the children had trouble concentrating.

And if you’re looking for even stricter rules, listen to the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend not allow your children age three and under watch any television.

U.S. Government Starts Mailing $40 Coupons for the Purchase of TV Converter Boxes

U.S. Government Starts Mailing $40 Coupons for the Purchase of TV Converter Boxes

Not only do you want your MTV, it’s also your constitutional right. Okay, maybe that’s taking it a bit too far, but the U.S. government believes it’s your right. First they made a law — no doubt influenced by heavy lobbying — that requires all broadcasters to move to high definition (HD). However, in doing so, every consumer must upgrade their television to an HD TV set. The only way around that is to buy a TV converter box to convert the digital signal to analog (the current standard). Hence, the government funded “we’ll help you pay for most of it” coupon program.

For those who have already applied to the program, they will soon get (or already have) a credit card-like coupon that entitles them to $40 off the cost of a TV converter box. A quick check at approved retailers showed the cost ranging from $55-$60, so you’ll still have to shell out $15-$20 plus sales tax. One thing that I noticed was that approved retailers will not sell them online. Every retailers’ website I visited stated that it was only available in-store.
